Mateo is a UC Davis undergraduate studying Philosophy (Pre-Law) and Political Science, with a minor in Human Rights. He joined the lab to pursue interdisciplinary philosophical research, specifically focusing on the gap between ethical theory and the behavior of real-world AI systems. Leading the AI Alignment subgroup, he researches and evaluates frameworks to align AI systems to support human agency, protect vulnerable populations, and remain accountable to democratic oversight.
